Research Interests

1) Nutrients (Nitrogen) and water management for cereal crops on drylands, one aspect is focusing on improving water use efficiency through agronomic and nutrient management practices and understanding mechanisms. Another is optimizing nutrient and water management for increasing crop yield and nutrient use efficiency, reducing nutrient losses.

2) Soil management and soil fertility, mostly concentrating on long-term effects of differed soil management and fertilization regimes on soil carbon sequestration and other related soil physical, chemical and biological properties.

Ongoing research projects

1) Integrated research and demonstration for reducing applications of fertilizer and pesticide for winter wheat in Fen-Wei Plain. 2018-2020, National Key Research and Development Program.

2) Use process of soil water at planting by winter wheat under plastic mulching and its regulating mechanisms in the Loess Plateau. 2017-2020, National Natural Science Foundation of China.

3) Measures and mechanisms for reducing nitrogen and phosphorus leaching in brown earth. 2016-2020, National Key Research and Development Program.

International cooperation

2013- to date: Victor Oscar Sadras, principal scientist in crop ecophysiology, South Australian Research & Development Institute.

2007-2010: Improving Livelihoods on Shaanxi Farms by reducing non-point N Pollution through Improved Nutrient Management. A co-operation project between Rothamsted Research, UK and Northwest A&F University, China.

2001-2005: Increasing the productivity per unit area of agricultural systems on dry lands in the Loess Plateau. A co-operation project to transfer knowledge and technology between Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and Northwest A&F University, China.
