报告摘要: Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is an ancient crop with a centre of origin in south-east Turkey and north-west Iran and was domesticated along with wheat, barley, rye, peas and lentil about 10,000 - 12,000 years ago. It was introduced into Australia in 1979 to provide a grain legume into the dryland cropping rotation. In this seminar, I will summarise the research conducted in Australia on the adaptation of chickpea to water-limited environments in the period from about 1990 to the present with emphasis on the physiological, morphological and biochemical traits associated with adaptation to drought. Recent research is also unravelling the molecular genetic basis of drought resistance in chickpea. Some of the difficulties of screening for drought resistance will also be discussed.

报告人介绍: Neil C. Turner graduated with a BSc in Agricultural Science from the University of Reading, U.K. in 1962, a PhD in Agronomy from the University of Adelaide in Australia in 1968 and a DSc in Agriculture from the University of Reading, U.K. in 1983. He has worked has a research scientist at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station in New Haven, USA (1967-1974), the University of Aberdeen, U.K. (1973), CSIRO Division of Plant Industry in Canberra (1974-1984) and Perth (1984-2005), Bayreuth University (1982) and Wuerzburg University (1993), Germany, and the International Rice Research Institute, The Philippines (1983). Neil Turner’s research has focussed on the physiological responses of a range of crop and tree species to abiotic stresses – water shortage, waterlogging, salinity and high temperature. He has published more than 400 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters in high-impact journals and books. In December 2021, he was recognised by Research.com as the third most highly cited person in Australia (and 32nd in the world) for papers in the fields of plant science and agronomy with 35,876 citations and an h-index of 93. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, Australian Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology and Foreign Fellow of the Indian Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Awards: Alexander von Humboldt Research Award, Germany; Medal, Australian Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology; Centenary Medal, Australian Government; Chancellor’s Medal, University of Western Australia; Dunhuang Award, Gansu Provincial Government, PR China; Friendship Award, PR China; Member (AM)  of the Order of Australia.
